Menopause Information
Just as puberty and regular menstrual cycles are natural occurrence in every
women's life, so also is menopause or the change in life.
It is not an illness or disease and yet it is often feared and treated as
such in our modern culture. The Greeks called menopause the climacterate or
"a step in the ladder" in keeping with their understanding of the
cycles of life in periods of 7 years. They considered the climacterate just
another normally occurring 7 year cycle where gradually and gracefully a woman
was relieved of the burden of bearing children.
For most women, the ending of her periods will occur between the ages of 45
and 55 although this can occur naturally as early as her 30's and as late as her
60's. Surgical menopause can occur at an age when a woman's ovaries are removed.
Women may or many not have problems of symptoms during their menopause
depending upon the state of their health and the other things that are going on
in their lives at that time. Possible contributors to menopause and the symptoms
of menopause are physical stressors such as adrenal exhaustion, hypoglycemia,
poor digestion and absorption, thyroid imbalance, lack of exercise, specific
vitamin and mineral deficiencies, toxicity and food and environmental
sensitivities as well as psychological stressors such as the onset of illness,
the children leaving home, the death or illness of parents, the loss of a
partner/spouse through separation, divorce or death and loss of employment. Also
in a culture where young in considered beautiful, and menopause can bring about
physical changes in women affecting their self image and self esteem, grief and
depression can set in.
Menopause is intended by nature to be natural and gradual process in which
the ovaries gradually reduce their estrogen output with the women having few, if
any, symptoms. Therefore, the natural treatment of a woman approaching or in the
menopause involves optimizing her total physical, emotional, mental and
spiritual health. This can be done through changes in her diet, detoxification,
vitamin and mineral supplementation, testing and desensitizing foods and
environmental sensitivities and allergies. Chinese herbal medications and
acupuncture, homeopathy and physical therapies.
These approaches assist in assessing and treating the underlying causes of as
well as the menopausal symptoms of each individual woman.
