Is menopause a disease…

If menopause isn’t a disease, why are women treated as though it is... in the 1940’s women were given extra estrogen to prevent osteoporosis... in the 1960’s women were all treated as though they had “estrogen deficiency”... in the 1970’s, concern that estrogen alone could increase the risk of cancer of the uterine lining (endometrium) led to the use of treatments using progesterone and estrogen in combination.

Now many women are seeking natural therapies for menopause due to the concern about the sources of the medication and the side effects from the use of pharmaceuticals in the treatment of menopause.

Just as puberty and regular menstrual cycles are natural occurrences in every woman’s life, so are perimenopause, menopause (also known as the change in life) and post menopause. The Greeks called menopause the climacterate or “step in the ladder” in keeping with their understanding of the cycles of life in periods of 7 years. Menopause, therefore, is intended by nature to be a natural and gradual process in which the ovaries gradually decrease their hormonal output with women having few, if any, symptoms.

Why do many women have problems or symptoms during menopause…

Symptoms of menopause can occur as a result of physical stressors such as poor digestion and absorption of nutrients, specific mineral and/or vitamin deficiencies, blood sugar imbalances, lack of exercise, thyroid imbalance, heavy metal toxicity, or external estrogens and/or other toxins. Possible psychological stressors contributing to the symptoms of menopause are the onset of an illness, children leaving home, the illness or death of parents, the loss of a partner/spouse through separation, divorce or death and/or the loss of employment. Also, in a culture where youth and beauty are idolized, menopause can bring about physical changes in women which can effect their self image and self esteem leading to grief and depression.

As a result of ongoing research with “baby boomers”, menopause is now viewed as a transition that may show up in many different ways and differently for each woman. Therefore, it is important to determine exactly what is happening with the 3 main hormones (estradiol, progesterone, testosterone) and the progesterone/estradiol ratio over 3 consecutive days in every woman’s body using a woman’s saliva. Once these levels are obtained and it is determined which one of the “12 Menopause Types” a woman is, an individual treatment program can be set up to minimize symptoms and to minimize and/or prevent osteoporosis, heart disease, blood sugar imbalances, weight problems, and/or depression.

Therefore, the Salivary Hormone Test available at our office is used to monitor and assess a woman’s hormonal balance in perimenopause, menopause and post menopause on a regular basis in order to prevent problems and treat them naturally.
