Symptoms of Macular Degeneration:

  • known as age related macular degeneration (ARMD)
  • is the leading cause of severe visual loss in people over 55 years of age
  • progressive visual loss is caused by degeneration of the macula
  • the loss of vision may be sudden or progress slowly
  • usually peripheral vision and color vision are not affected

Types of Age Related Macular Degeneration:

  • Atropic “dry” form (most frequent)
    • 80-95% of people with ARMD have this type
    • changes occur in the innermost layer of the retina
    • the disease progresses slowly
    • only central vision is lost
    • peripheral vision remains intact

  • “wet”, exudative or neurovascular
    • affects 5-20% of people with ARMD
    • is caused by blood or fluid developing under the center of the retina
    • this causes scarring and loss of vision

Possible Causes of Macular Degeneration:

  • aging
  • high blood pressure
  • atherosclerosis
  • environmental toxins - pollution, alcohol, cigarette smoke, additives, preservatives
  • free radical damage from saturated fats, denatured fats and oils (exposed to heat, exposed to air eg fried foods, luncheon meats, roasted nuts)

Natural Therapies:

  • There are various nutrients, natural supplements and lifestyle changes which can help slow down or stop macular degeneration.
