Dr. Lawrence Seliski is a naturopath that provides naturopathic services and care to greater Vancouver Cholesterol

Background Information:

Atherosclerosis and its complications (heart disease and cerebrovascular accidents - strokes) are said to be responsible for 43% of all deaths in the United States and are directly related to our abnormal dietary habits which consist of a diet high in refined carbohydrates and animal fasts. Therefore, it appears that atherosclerosis could be significantly delayed through a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Cholesterol is a component of the platelet cell membrane and as the blood cholesterol level raises, do does the platelet cholesterol. A the platelet cholesterol increases, the tendency for the platelet to stick to the arterial wall also increase. Although a rise in blood cholesterol has been associated with the formation of atherosclerosis plaques on the arterial walls, it cannot be said that dietary cholesterol is the single most important factor causing an increased blood cholesterol. It has been found, in fact, that a modest increase in dietary cholesterol will not create a significant rise in blood cholesterol levels. The body's ability to form cholesterol within the body from other non-fat energy sources such as the amount and kind of protein eater, the amount and kind of fat eaten is of far more importance to the total blood fat picture than excessive cholesterol in the diet. It has been found certain amino acids such as arginine, histidine and lysine, which are highest in animal proteins, are capable of being converted to cholesterol within the body. Other factors which affect the blood cholesterol made within the body include the levels of certain vitamins, minerals and fatty acids as well as stress, refined carbohydrates and sugar consumption, alcohol consumption and the lack of cardiovascular exercise.
