What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been one of the main healing techniques of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Its purpose is to restore the free flow of energy (chi). For example, in Chinese medicine, pain is considered to be caused by the congestion of energy (chi) and acupuncture is used to relieve the pain by moving the energy (chi) in the congested area.

There are 12 main meridians which have a varying number of points along them and, according to traditional Chinese medicine, relate to 12 organ systems in the body. Classical Chinese medicine describes 365 acupuncture points, but modern-day practitioners claim that there are actually approximately 2,000 points.

Acupuncture involves inserting a slender needle into an acupuncture point. The needles are left in place for 15 to 20 minutes, and may be twirled or can be stimulated using a weak, pulsing electrical current. Another approach is to place very small press needles in auricular (ear) acupuncture points which also relate to organs and/or physical areas of the body. These press needles are covered with small bandages and left in place. The body will often allow the these hypoallergenic needles to remain in the ear for approximately 2 weeks providing movement of energy through the corresponding organ and/or physical area of the body.

Acupuncture is used to treat a variety of physical and mental problems including addiction problems, anxiety attacks, asthma, digestive problems, joint problems, reproductive system problems, respiratory problems, and urinary problems.
